On December 24, 2016 at approximately 1000 am the Fremont County Sheriff s Office was advised of a possible vehicle in the ditch in the 3600 block of 120th Street.
When the deputy arrived on scene it turned out to be a single car accident. Carol Mangus of rural Sidney was westbound on 120th Street when a possible blown tire
caused the 2010 Ford F150 to slide into the North ditch causing minor damage to the truck. Magnus was not injured in the accident.

On December 24, 2016, at approximately 11:50 am the Fremont County Sheriff s Office received a call of a feed truck on fire in the 1100 block of Highway 275 just
South
of the Fremont-Mills School. Before emergency crews could arrive the sheriff s office then received a call of a head on accident at that location. When the
deputy arrived on scene another rear end accident had happened at that same location. Poor visibility because of fog and smoke and slick roads made the accident
scene treacherous.

A 2016 Dodge Charger was Northbound and was driven by Brandi Beem of Tabor came upon the burning truck and was afraid of being rear-ended because of the very dense fog
and slick roads and tried to go around the truck. After entering the smoke from the burning truck Beem 's vehicle struck a  Southbound 2013 Hyundai Accent head-on driven by
Keri Hawhee of Omaha, Nebraska. Shortly after that collision a 2017 Hyundai driven by Kaylee Bartholomew of  Essex that was Northbound came up to the accident and
was struck by a 2005 Ford F150 driven by Alex Donnelly of Shenandoah. The drivers and passengers were all checked out at the scene and no injuries  were reported.

The accident remains under investigation by the Fremont County Sheriff s Office and citations may be issued at a later date.

The Fremont County Sheriff s Office was assisted at the scene by the Tabor Police Department, Iowa State Patrol , Tabor Fire and Rescue and Sidney Fire and Rescue

FORMER FREMONT COUNTY LANDFILL MANAGER VANRENAN CHARGED WITH ONGOING CRIMINAL CONDUCT AND THEFT IN THE SECOND DEGREE

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office is reporting the arrest of Dusty Jay VanRenan, age 31, of Sidney, Iowa for Ongoing Criminal Conduct, a Class B Felony and Theft in the Second Degree, a Class D Felony. The basis of the charges are related to VanRenan’s conduct while serving as the manager of the Fremont County Landfill.

The Investigation of VanRenan began in September of 2015 when Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope was approached by a member of the Fremont County Landfill Board with suspicion that there may have been some fraudulent activity by VanRenan, the former landfill manager. After the initial investigation by the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office it was determined that there was enough suspicion that there had been misappropriation to ask for assistance form the Iowa State Auditor’s Office.

After the completion of the State Auditor’s Office investigation, it was determined that VanRenan, who had started a recycling program at the landfill, had used the landfills flatbed truck to haul nine load of pallets to AA Pallet in Council Bluffs and sold the pallets for a total of $5,454.50. The checks were made out in VanRenan’s name and the money was never paid to the landfill.

VanRenan turned himself in to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and posted ten percent on the $25,000.00 bond.

The State Auditor’s Office released a full report of the audit available here.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Fremont County Attorney’s Office and the Iowa State Auditor’s Office in this investigation. All further inquiries should be directed to the Fremont County Attorney’s Office.
